The DELTA Project

"There is no power for change greater than a community discovering what it cares about.”
-Margaret J. Wheatley

Domestic Violence Prevention Enhancement and Leadership Through Alliances (DELTA) is a project of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, intended to prevent first time perpetration and first time victimization of Intimate Partner Violence.

Newport is one of four cities in Rhode Island engaged in the project.  In 2003, two community-based teams—Communities Overcoming ViolencE (COVE) and Students Against Domestic Abuse (SADA)—were established in Newport.  In the years since, they have been working together to develop and implement primary prevention strategies that address risk and protective factors at multiple levels of the social ecology.

Newport COVE is a group of concerned citizens working to eradicate domestic violence in Newport.

Newport COVE seeks to create a healthy, empowered community where:

  • We know our neighbors
  • Domestic violence and other forms of violence are not acceptable
  • Young people are valued & supported
  • Racism, sexism, and other forms of oppression are challenged openly
  • We each have the skills, knowledge, and access necessary to lead healthy, safe lives

Students Against Domestic Abuse (SADA) is a student-run, community supported organization that strives to prevent domestic violence by promoting awareness and addressing its root causes.

SADA members organize events and activities to educate their peers about healthy relationships, traditional gender norms, and nonviolence.  SADA members have also produced public service announcements for both television and radio.

COVE & SADA Partnership Statement

Newport Community Overcoming Violence (COVE) recognizes Students Against Domestic Abuse (SADA) as a valuable resource in our community and engage with them as partners to bring about positive community change to prevent domestic abuse and domestic violence in our community. There is a great need for teen leadership to help build a healthy and non-violent community.  Social change is always slow and incremental, and there are many barriers to overcome.  By including teens into all levels of decision- making we will be better able to end domestic abuse and domestic violence in Newport.
