Purpose and Philosophy

The purpose of the Women’s Resource Center (WRC) is to empower victims of domestic violence and their children through individual and social change. Education, support and advocacy programs are offered to assist victims to gain control of their lives, exercising their right to live without fear in their own homes.

Rhode Island Coalition Against Domestic Violence:
The Rhode Island Coalition Against Domestic Violence was incorporated in 1979 to assist and support Rhode Island's shelters for battered women in statewide planning and development. The Coalition and our six member agencies have been providing services to victims of domestic violence for the last fifteen years, consistently expanding services in an attempt to provide the comprehensive support battered women in need.

Sisters Overcoming Abusive Relationships
SOAR is a grass roots organization made up solely of survivors of domestic violence and are a taskforce of the Rhode Island Coalition Against Domestic Violence. SOAR advocates on behalf of victims of domestic violence and work on issues such as child custody through legislation and community organizing.

Department of Human Services:
The Department of Human Services' primary mission is to provide financial and health services to needy individuals and families in Rhode Island. In the provision of these services, the Department's objective is to assist individuals and families to the maximum extent possible to achieve self-sufficiency, self-care and a strengthening of family life. Rhode Island Commission on Women:

Department of Elderly Affairs:
The Department of Elderly Affairs was established as the principal agency of the state to mobilize the human, physical, and financial resources available to plan, develop, and implement innovative programs to insure the dignity and independence of elderly persons. National Coalition Against Domestic Violence:
NCADV is dedicated to the empowerment of battered women and their children and therefore is committed to the elimination of personal and societal violence in the lives of battered women and their children.  This web site provides links to resources, information on public policy and schedules for upcoming activities.

Link to information and resources through this web site.  This site offers telephone numbers, fact sheets and recent press releases that focus on domestic violence issues.

Founded in 1873, Newport Hospital offers a wide range of health care services including the Birthing Center, inpatient mental health programs, diagnostic imaging and occupational health.

Rhode Island Micro Enterprise :
The Rhode Island MicroEnterprise Association (RIMA), in partnership with community-based organizations located throughout the state, provides free microbusiness training and business technical assistance to persons wishing to start their own small business.
